George W Bush quotes, Bush quotes

George W. Bush, born July 6th 1946. 43rd President of the United States of America, serving from 2001 until 2009. 26th Govenor of Texas serving from 1995 until 2000.

George Bush Jr. was born in New Haven, Connecticut to Barbara and George H.W. Bush and was raised in Midland Texas where he attended public schools, before moving on to Houston Texas along with his four siblings. George Bush finished high school at an all male school: Philips Academy in Andover Massachusetts where he developed a passion for baseball and became head cheerleader. Bush progressed to Yale University (1964 – 1958) graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. In 1973 George Bush attended Harvard Business school earning an MBA.

1968 saw George Bush drafted into the Texas Air National Guard, eventually being assigned to Houston and flying Convair F-102s. Some critics stated that his father’s political weight advanced his position with the Texas Air National Guard, given his poor attendance and mediocre test scores. In 1972/73 Bush drilled with the 187th Tactical Reconnaissance Group of the Alabama Air National Guard.

After several episodes of alcohol abuse, one of which had him arrested for driving under the influence, George W. Bush was introduced to Laura Welch (a teach and librarian) by friends in 1977, and proposed marriage after a mere three months. George Bush left the Episcopal Church to join Laura’s United Methodist Church instead, and four years later they had twin daughters – Jenna and Barbara. George gave up the booze in 1986 at the age of 40.

In 1978 George W. Bush lost the election for the House of Representatives from Texas's 19th congressional district and so returned to the oil industry. Bush’s oil company suffered financial hardships in 1984 and was merged with another oil company where Bush served on the board of directors.

In 1988 the Bush family moved to Washington D.C. to work on his father’s campaign for presidency. George travelled the country campaigning for his father, and returned to Texas where he purchased shares in the Texas Rangers baseball franchise. His $800k investment eventually turned into $15 million in less than a decade.

1994 saw George W. declare candidacy for the Texas gubernatorial election. He easily won the Republican primary and eventually went on to win the general election with 53.5% of the votes. In 1998 he won again, this time with 69% of the vote, and became the first governor in Texas to win two consecutive four-term years.

It was June 1999 that saw Bush announce his candidacy for President of the USA, asking Dick Cheney to be his running mate in July 2000. George W. Bush won 29 states, including that of Florida, however the call was so close that a recount was required, tying up the outcome for months in the courts… The rest is history. George W. Bush was sworn in as president on January 20th, 2001. September 11th 2001 changed the face of Bush’s political agenda: wars were waged in Afghanistan and then in Iraq and Bush’s approval ratings continued to plummet. In 2007 the US went into a major recession, which was met with an ambitious plan for a $1.3 trillion tax cut program. Bush tried to stimulate the economy by sending tax rebates to many Americans with tax breaks for struggling businesses. By April 2008 George’s disapproval ratings were the highest ever recorded, and on January 20th 2009, George and Laura Bush waved to the crowd at Andrews Air Force Base, before their final departure.

George W. Bush now keeps a low profile, stating "I have no desire to see myself on television... I don't want to be a panel of formers instructing the currents on what to do. I'm trying to regain a sense of anonymity. I didn't like it when a certain former president — and it wasn't 41 (George H.W. Bush) or 42 (Bill Clinton) -- made my life miserable." (referring to 39th President Jimmy Carter, who was an outspoken critic of Bush.)
